It’s Farewell, Not Goodbye: A Night We’ll Carry With Us

Rotary District 7475 closed an unforgettable chapter with a heartfelt farewell dinner honoring our Japanese Short-Term Youth Exchange students from District 2670.
The students shared the beauty of Japanese culture through dance, singing, poetry, keyboard, flute, and violin performances—offering one final gift to the host families and Rotarians who had shared their journey.
After weeks of friendship, discovery, and experiences across New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania, the evening was a powerful reminder that Rotary Youth Exchange is about much more than travel. It is about building relationships across cultures, opening hearts, and creating memories that last long after the journey ends.
It was farewell—but certainly not goodbye.

Some evenings stay with you.
This was one of them.
At the farewell dinner for our Japanese Short-Term Youth Exchange students from Rotary District 2670, we gathered knowing that an unforgettable chapter was coming to a close.
But before we said farewell, these remarkable young people gave us one more gift.
They shared Japan with us.
Through dance, singing, poetry, keyboard, flute, and violin performances, they opened a window into their culture, their traditions, and their hearts. It was beautiful. It was joyful. And at times, it was deeply emotional.
For the host families who welcomed these students into their homes, the goodbye was especially hard.
But the emotion reached far beyond the host families.
Every Rotarian who traveled with them, laughed with them, learned with them, and watched them experience New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania felt it too.
Over these past weeks, we visited landmarks, museums, monuments, communities, and places many of us know well. But seeing them through the eyes of these young people made those places feel new again.
Somewhere along the way, this became about much more than an exchange.
Friendships were formed.
Families grew a little larger.
Cultures came closer.
And young people from opposite sides of the world reminded us of something Rotary has always understood: when we open our homes and our hearts to one another, the distance between us becomes very small.
So yes, this was a farewell.
But it did not feel like goodbye.
Because the memories, the laughter, the music, the conversations, and the relationships will travel home with them—and remain here with us.
To our students from District 2670: thank you for trusting us with this chapter of your lives.
Thank you for sharing your culture.
Thank you for allowing us to become part of your story.
And thank you for becoming part of ours.
Farewell, dear friends. Until we meet again.
